Nitroglycerin

Nitroglycerin is an ingredient of Dynamite Gum.

  • The chemical name of nitroglycerin is trinitroxypropane.
  • The chemical formula of nitroglycerin is C3H5N3O9.
  • Nitroglycerin has very negative health effects.  It is highly explosive, dangerous to the natural environment and extremely toxic is inhaled or swallowed.  It can explode with by shock or by just rubbing it against something from friction.  It is extremely toxic in aquatic environments and the sea life that it houses.
  • Nitroglycerin is produced by nitrating glycerol with white fuming nitric acid under exact conditions.  The base of the substance is a nitrate.  When it is produced large amounts of sulfuric acid and nitric acid are needed to the production process.
  • Nitroglycerin appears as a colorless liquid at room temperature with a density of 1.6 g/mL.  This means that it is denser than water and would sink if placed in water. It is only slightly soluble in water so it will not dissolve completely.  It melts at 57 degrees Fahrenheit and will vaporize at 122 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • By adding nitroglycerin to their gum, the Cotta company makes their product really explosive. Pop Rocks have nothing on Dynamite Gum.
